Potty Training Your Dog Effectively
Thursday, January 10th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedIt’s a well used adage that a dog is man’s best friend. But there is a lot of truth in this, dogs can be extremely loyal and affectionate companions or members of the family. They will be the only one to listen to you at times. They will always be happy to see you when you get home. They are very generous with their love and even if you scold them before you leave the house, they will always welcome you with a wagging tail or a sloppy lick when you return. That is why getting a puppy is such a great experience for your home and family. It is like getting a new family member who will grow into the house and bring value to your life. However, like most youngsters, puppies need to learn what is right and wrong and how to behave. This is particularly relevant to potty training. This article will give you ideas on potty training your dog effectively.
Dog Potty Training Your Puppy
It is fairly predictable when your puppy needs to go to the toilet. This is approximately 15 – 20 minutes after it has eaten. As a new owner you should try to spend as much time with the new puppy as possible (or at least the family should give it as much attention as possible). If this is the case you could always arrange to take the little critter outside ten or so minutes after it has eaten. You can let is wander around and eventually it will go to the toilet.
If you want your puppy to pee or poop in a particular spot you can note how soon after it’s eaten that it goes and then take it to a particular spot. This will eventually sink in and the puppy will see this spot as it’s toilet.
Dog potty training is essential for puppies so that they will not be scolded all the time. Other times that you will have to take it out for nature breaks are when it wakes up (this is tricky, if you are not right in front of it when it wakes), when you take it out of it’s crate or box and after it has had a heavy drink of water or a snack.
Dog potty training is a must for you as you don’t want to be cleaning up dog poop all the time. You need to be observant of your puppy’s body language right after it eats and any other time that it is in the house to avoid accidents happening. They will happen to begin with but eventually your puppy will be just as keen as you, that it goes outside when nature calls. Another important part of training is to praise your puppy right after it pees or poops in the place where you want it to. This will reinforce your actions of taking it outside.
Dog Potty Training Tricks
If you do not have time to potty train your puppy initially then you could try keeping it in the kitchen with a piece of newspaper in the corner. If you observe the puppy arching its back or going through the motions of beginning to poop, place it on the newspaper. Once it gets used to the newspaper, it will see it as it’s toilet. This is useful at night times when the puppy is alone.
When you have the time for dog potty training, you can use the paper to reinforce the idea of the toilet. When you take the puppy outside place the paper where you want it to poop. The puppy will get the idea and use this area as it’s toilet.
