Let Your Pup or Dog Chew Something

Anyone that has had a puppy or young dog knows that dogs like to chew things – generally your latest pair of sneakers (but that’s another story). The truth is that dogs, and pups especially, love to chew things. There are a number of reasons for this. Firstly, the dog investigates something by chewing it. This goes hand in hand with smelling whatever it decides to chew. It is a natural way to discover new things and educate itself on what is safe and dangerous. Your animal may also chew something to exercise the teeth or gums. It may also chew because it is bored or simply for the fun of it.

Despite the fact that you may have lost a few of your prized possessions to the jaws of your new puppy, you shouldn’t discourage a dog from chewing. Rather give it things that it can chew that you will not miss. There are all sorts of chew toys around and you could even give them a dog treat from time to time. Ensure that the chew toy is very durable and digestible.

Be careful about the sorts of items that you give your dog or puppy to play (and chew) with. Balls are an obvious choice for a dog but be sure to select the right size ball for a dog. In this respect, the bigger is probably the better. Small balls can get stuck in the dogs wind pipe and lead to choking. Select items that the dog cannot swallow whole. If they are going to eat it at least they will have to break it down into chewable chunks.
